Moral Courage And ConscienceWe see too much of one and not enough of the other

There just never seems to be a dearth of topics for reflection in this newsletter. The themes for this week: moral courage and conscience.

But first, all of us here at PJ Media, PJTV and Next Generation.TV send our heartfelt condolences to the people of Moore, Okla., which was devastated by a tornado early this week. The storm killed at least 24 people, including nine children inside a school, injured dozens more and leveled entire neighborhoods.

My first duty station in the U.S. Army was at Fort Sill just south of Moore, so we feel a special bond with those of you in that community. Angela, Aubrey, Austen, Lin and I send up prayers to our heavenly Father that you will be consoled in this time of heavy emotional stress and despair. We also ask that God welcome your loved ones into His loving arms, where you all shall be with them again one day.

Humbled to be a considered a hero
It has been a busy travel week for this ole paratrooper. It was great to be back in Georgia and address the Republican convention there. To have the distinct honor of standing before the delegates of the Virginia GOP convention in Richmond also will be a moment I will never forget.

After those events, I flew back to Los Angeles to attend the American Freedom Alliance’s Heroes of Conscience awards banquet. It was truly humbling to receive the 2013 “Heroes of Conscience” award from this organization because the alliance seeks to promote the principles and values that strengthen western civilization. Its president, Avi Davis, is an ardent warrior for liberty, freedom and the free market.

Sadly, Davis told the audience that the group’s tax-exempt status has been revoked. The tornado that hit Moore, Okla., demonstrates nature’s power to destroy lives. But the news about AFA demonstrates that the man-caused disaster from government’s misuse of power can be far more destructive to our great constitutional republic.

Virginian Thomas Jefferson, once stated: “When the people fear the government there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty.” I do not believe anyone in the Obama administration is worthy to be recognized as a hero of conscience.

A cast of characters without conscience
As I was flying to Los Angeles on Jet Blue Monday morning, I watched the movie “Black Hawk Down” on FX. If any modern-day combat movie truly features heroism, that is it. The Rangers and Delta operators who fought the 1993 battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, in the movie exemplified heroism for all of us to see.

But as I watched the movie, I recalled how former President Bill Clinton, through then-Defense Secretary Les Aspin, denied support to our men in combat there. That memory made me reflect upon how the other Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, more recently abandoned Americans engaged in combat with Islamic terrorists in Benghazi, Libya.

The words of Gen. William Garrison, the U.S. forces commander in Somalia, symbolized the creed of warriors: “No one gets left behind.” I wonder if Gen. Carter Ham issued the same order the night terrorists attacked the U.S. embassy in Benghazi and killed four Americans but heard a different order from Washington?

Howard Dean called Benghazi a laughable joke.

Conscience.

This week we learned that it was not just reporters at the Associated Press targeted by the Obama administration. Fox News Washington correspondent James Rosen and CBS investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson have, too.

The last time I checked, America had “freedom of the press,” but these intimidation tactics are far from displaying the foundations of our constitutional republic. How much deeper does this go?

Conscience.

This week we also learned what many of us with a military background already knew: Maj. Nidal Hasan has been getting pay since he fired upon soldiers and civilians at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. Hasan has received some $278,000 and benefits as he awaits trial for his heinous and treasonous action. He shot 45 of our brave soldiers, killing 13 of them, all the while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

Of course, our government officially declared his terrorist attack as “workplace violence,” so the victims have been denied proper recognition and benefits. Why? Well, according to the U.S. Army, declaring what Hasan did to be a terrorist attack would unfairly impact his trial. He will be paid until proven guilty.

Conscience.

An emboldened enemy
Let it be known that our lack of national conscience in punishing Hasan, and truly in reacting to domestic Islamic terrorism, has emboldened the enemy.

That was sadly obvious again this week when Islamic jihadists attacked and beheaded a British soldier in broad daylight. Even more despicable, disgusting and savage, one of the barbarians with blood-soaked hands made a video describing the attack and promising more of them.

I pray the British have learned a lesson from us here in America and will not call this attack workplace violence, especially because these bastards also were shouting “Allahu Akbar” as they brutally killed the soldier. Have we lost our sense of moral courage and conscience, not just in America but also across Western civilization?

The next generation must have men and women of conscience to ensure that we pass on the blessings of liberty, freedom and democracy – our American birthright. Part of our DNA, the American genome, is threatened.

We need men like the two brave Americans who lost their lives this week, FBI special agents Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw. They were part of the hostage rescue team in the Critical Incident Response Group and lost their lives during a fast-rope training exercise from a helicopter onto a ship when they plunged into the Atlantic Ocean amid rough weather and ocean conditions.

Lorek is survived by his wife and two daughters, and Shaw is survived by his wife, daughter and son. America will persevere as long as we continue to raise such men and women of conscience, not cowardice.

Steadfast and Loyal,

Allen B. West

By Michael Youssef:

Politicians accuse each other of failure, which is to be expected. Each side has their “narrative,” and the truth often loses out (although I am thankful for the honest and courageous ones who do speak the truth).

But since I’m not a politician, but instead have a prophetic journalistic voice, I will speak the truth and let the chips fall where they may.

Congressman Allen West addressed the Georgia Republican Party State Convention Victory Dinner.

GP: “You’re not coming here to announce that you’re running for the U.S. Senate from Georgia, are you?”

AW: “No, I think if I were to do that, I’d have everyone from Paul Broun to Phil Gingrey to Jack Kingston, and who’s this other…Karen Handel…. I don’t know if I could fight my way out of that. I mean it’s bad enough that I’m in Athens, Georgia, and I’m a University of Tennessee graduate, from Georgia, so it is tough being here, but that’s okay.”

GP: “One of the big issues that we’re beginning to struggle with as a party is outreach to African-Americans….”

AW: “First of all, I would rather you say Black American, because when people say ‘African-American,’ that is a collectivizing term. I have friends in South Florida who are Caucasian and they’re from the former Rhodesia, Zimbabwe, they’re from South Africa, and now they’re American citizens, and they consider themselves what? I think that we have to be careful about that because the other side does a good job of balkanizing us and so I don’t like to hyphenate. I’m an American Black. That’s how I like to be referred to.”

GP: “One of the problems that we as white Americans have is we’re afraid to say ‘Black,’ we’re afraid we’re going to offend somebody.”

AW: “You’re terrified. But you see, Todd, that’s the exact thing we need to look at and talk about. The other side has been so successful at managing lexicon and the language that they have white Americans afraid. Afraid to say anything.”

“But yet you can have the President Emeritus of the NAACP, Julian Bond, a Georgian, he can stand up there and say that the Tea Party, just basic Ma and Pa, who believe in the Constitutional Republic that we live in, he’s comparing them to the Taliban, so we have to stop allowing the other side to put us in corners and make us afraid to say anything.”

“We’ve got to challenge them. It’s just the same as you don’t hear people in Washington, DC say ‘government spending,’ anymore, it’s ‘investment.’ Government doesn’t invest anything, they spend your money. So, let’s understand that words do matter, and let’s stop allowing ourselves to be pigeon-holed.”

We have more audio and will post the rest of the interview later on gapundit.com.

The Motto’s That Define Us - The Obama administration could use a few good words

What a week! We have officially opened our new office/studio here in Washington, D.C., and it is great to have a finger on the pulse – yeah, I know exactly what you are thinking.

It has been one heck of a week, and I can tell you I’d much rather be me than the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Now you ask, “Why?” My response is the subject for this week’s missive – mottos.

See, I grew up in an organization defined by its respective mottos, creeds that guided those of us who served. And if people are really sincere about their service to this nation within their respective military units, these mottos define them for the rest of their lives.

I recall being a young fella and watching the movie “The Green Berets” with John Wayne. I remember the scene of him standing at Airborne School and shouting, “Who are you?” and hearing the reply, “Airborne!” The next challenge was “How far?” and the response was, “All the Way!” Years later, there I stood on that same training ground shouting: “Airborne, sir! Airborne Sergeant Black Hat!”

And when I and the rest of the 4th Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment (Airborne Battalion Combat Team) reached our first duty station in Vicenza, Italy, we took pride in our challenge and response, “Airborne all the way!” This motto signified that we were a cut above others, that our standards were just a bit higher. We were U.S. Army paratroopers after all.

My second duty assignment was in the famed 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan. Our motto harkened back to the division’s incredible landing on Omaha Beach, France, on D-Day: “No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great, duty first.”

That simple creed articulated what it meant to serve in that division but also to serve our nation. It was never about you. It was about duty first!

I also was an artillery officer and commanded Bravo Battery, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, where our motto was “Swift and bold.” I have always tried to honor that creed by being swift to action, not delaying, and being bold in my stance for freedom and principle.

After I commanded, I served in the 4th Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment. (Trivia fact: Our sister battalion, 1/5 FA, was the home of Alpha Battery, which was known as “Hamilton’s Own” after our first Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton, who served in that historic artillery outfit.) The motto of the 5th Field Artillery was “Faithful and true,” and God knows none of us are perfect but what a fantastic motto. To be faithful to a set of principles and true to something greater than self is the epitome of being a selfless servant of the republic.

Proud to be ‘second to none’
After instructing the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Kansas State University I headed to the Republic of Korea and the famed 2nd Infantry Division. The division motto? “Second to none.” Who the heck doesn’t want to see their unit as first – the best? Who would not want to see America as “Second to none”?

We never apologized for being in the ole Black Patch Division. Some people saw us as the cannon fodder for a North Korea invasion. We knew that if the North Koreans ever thought about crossing the demilitarized zone separating them from South Korea, they would get a butt whuppin’ second to none!

After serving in Korea, I was promoted to major and selected to attend the Army Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan. My orders then took me to Fort Bragg, N.C., and the 18th Field Artillery Brigade. My mentor Col. Denny R. Lewis was the brigade commander. He instituted a new motto to complement our “Sweat saves blood” unit crest motto – “Tough, proud, disciplined.”

I also served there in the 1st Battalion (Air Assault), 377th Field Artillery Regiment, where our motto was “Be bold, Air Assault.”

In the political realm, what liberal progressives need to understand is that my DNA is hardwired to be bold, tough, aggressive and disciplined in my stand against whatever threatens my nation. Plus I’m an ole Southern boy. Never get our dander up ’cause we like a good old-fashioned fight.

My last two duty assignments – Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Fort Hood, Texas – added the icing to the cake. First I was selected to do an exchange assignment with the 2nd Marines Expeditionary Force and the world knows the Marines motto “Semper fidelis,” translated “Always faithful!” My final assignment was to command an artillery battalion in the 4th Infantry Division, another historic Army unit that landed at Utah Beach, France, on D-Day.

The motto of our 2nd Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment (MLRS) was “Duty, not reward” – that is why we serve. And I still use the motto of the famed Ivy Division to sign off here every week: “Steadfast and loyal.”

Throughout my military career I also had some awesome call signs. OK, they were not as sexy as Maverick, Goose or Iceman from Hollywood’s “Top Gun. But Detonate 6, Ranger 14, Steel 3, Gunslinger 5, and Deep Strike 6 are still great.

What motto’s define Obama and his team?
Why did I share this with you all? Consider the scandals of our current federal government – the fast and furious “gun-walking” scandal; the reaction to the terrorist attack on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya; the shameful and deadly Extortion 17 incident I revisited last week; the IRS’ politically motivated targeting of conservative nonprofit groups; the Justice Department’s secret collection of Associated Press telephone records; and much more.

Ask yourself, what is the motto of the Obama administration? What creed do all the president’s men and women embrace as a guiding light to serve and protect the American republic?

What would you see as appropriate call signs for President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder?

I recount the units I served and their mottos with great pride. Those simple words were more than just momentary challenges and responses during my military career; they are defining descriptors for my life. And I couldn’t care less what characterless media writers say.

Ask yourself, can our elected leaders sign off with the words you see next?

Steadfast and Loyal,

Allen B. West

Homeland Security guidelines advise deference to pro-Shariah Muslim supremacists

By Charles C. Johnson:

The Department of Homeland Security, which under Secretary Janet Napolitano has shown a keen interest in monitoring and warning about outspoken conservatives, takes a very different approach in monitoring political Islamists, according to a 2011 memo on protecting the free speech rights of pro-Shariah Muslim supremacists.

In a checklist obtained by The Daily Caller entitled “Countering Violent Extremism Dos and Don’ts” the DHS’s Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties notifies local and national law enforcement officials that…
