(WASHINGTON) Congressman Allen West (FL-22) will join Rep. Mike Rogers (AL-3) on Wednesday, September 21 to host United Through Reading’s annual Capitol Reception held in the CVC Congressional Reading Room North at 11:30 am. The non-profit organization helps ease the stress of separation for military families by having deployed parents read children’s books aloud via DVD for their child to watch at home.
“As a retired Army officer and a proud father of two wonderful daughters, I know firsthand the toll that military life can have on families,” West said. “During my deployments in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom it was difficult for my family to know I was half a world away from them. I applaud all that United Through Reading does to ensure our men and women in uniform can stay connected to their families and their children during these trying times.”
United Through Reading’s CEO, Sally Ann Zoll, says the organization has served over 325,000 beneficiaries in 2010.
“Service members can read from nearly 300 recording locations worldwide, 70 participating USOs and at individual commands or units deployed around the globe,” said Zoll. “Deployment doesn’t only affect our service members. It affects hundreds of thousands of children as well. Our goal is to lessen the strain of separation and increase bonding through the positive, educational experience that reading aloud provides.”
