It was a grueling hearing. A month after the September 2012 attack on the United States diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, House Republicans grilled a top State Department official about security lapses at the outpost.

Later that day, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton tapped out an email to a close adviser: “Did we survive the day?” she wrote.

McCarthy Defends House Request for Clinton Emails

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Sunday defended a move by House Republicans to urge Hillary Clinton to turn over her private email server to an independent third party for investigation. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of the House Committee on Benghazi, sent a letter to Clinton?s attorney on Thursday asking that she make her email server available to either the State Department inspector general or another independent party. Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential frontrunner, has come under fire for using a private server to conduct official State Department business. Appearing on CBS?s ?Face the Nation,? McCarthy stressed the committee is only interested in emails pertaining to the 2012 terrorist attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.
