House panel gives thumbs-down to retirement change proposal – Rep Allen West

A proposal to change the military retirement system is not sitting well with Republicans and Democrats alike on a House Armed Services subcommittee.

The panel discussed a proposal to change the military’s retirement system to one based on contributions, much like a 401(k).

Rep. Allen West (R-FL), himself a veteran, says that’s not fair to those who protect America’s freedom.

“When I look at people that are serving in our military, that’s a defining contribution,” West said at the hearing.  “And on the back side, I think that we should be giving them a defining benefit for that contribution.”
