Louisiana Deputy shot multiple times in AMBUSH while directing traffic in school zone

WDSU REPORTING ON THE SCENE:

NEW ORLEANSA St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot multiple times in an “ambush” Thursday morning, officials said.

The deputy, who was identified as Cpl. Burt Hazeltine, was directing traffic in a school zone about 9 a.m. on Highway 90 and Louisiana Streets in Paradis when shots were fired.

Officials said Hazeltine was struck in the elbow, eye and chest. The Sheriff’s Office said a bullet was lodged behind Hazeltine’s left eye and is suffering from internal bleeding.

A suspect was in custody within minutes of the shooting, authorities said. The suspect’s name wasn’t released.
