On Monday, the schedule includes a “fireside chat” chat with U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Plantation. On Wednesday, breakfast is followed by a “welcome” from West. On Thursday the trip ends with closing remarks from – you guessed it – West.
From the published schedule of the Washington, D.C., “fly in,” during which 75 members of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce will spend part of four days learning and lobbying in the capital West seems like a constant presence.
Not mentioned the four Democrats who represent part of Broward, including U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, whose districts – like West’s – include lots of the city of Fort Lauderdale. (Also not mentioned, for that matter, is U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, whose district takes in part of southwest Broward.)
J.W. Arnold, a member of the Chamber’s Washington fly-in steering committee, said West’s had “been very helpful in facilitating our arrangements.”
He said he expected participation – at least in an evening reception – from U.S. Reps. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, and Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton, both of whom represent parts of Broward. Wasserman Schultz’ office is trying to arrange time, he said.
