(WASHINGTON)—Congressman Allen West (R-FL) will visit Capitol Supply, an office product distributor in Sunrise, Florida on Thursday. West will meet with the employees and management team of the company that he prevented from closing due to federal government actions.
Capitol Supply performs transactions with federal customers through the General Services Administration (GSA). As a result of the GSA’s action to suspend contracts with the company, Capitol Supply was within 30 days of laying off at least half of its workforce.
“Because of the direct action of Representative Allen West, the employees of Capitol Supply were saved,” said Robert Steinman, CEO of Capitol Supply. “The employees are excited to meet Congressman West and thank him in person for his actions.”
Upon hearing of the company’s problem late last year, Congressman West contacted GSA Administrator Martha Johnson to discuss Capitol Supply’s standing with GSA and what appeared to be a miscommunication between the agency and the small business. The issue was eventually resolved before Capitol Supply would have been forced to close its doors.
“My role as a Congressman is to be an advocate on behalf of businesses that work with the federal government,” West said. “I appreciate Capitol Supply acknowledging my efforts, and I am pleased the company will continue to operate in South Florida.”
Steinman says employees plan to have banners and balloons to welcome Congressman West. Many of the signs will read “Thank You,” and “Job well done, Congressman.”
Capitol Supply has operated in Sunrise, Florida since 1983 and has 41 employees.
Congressman West is a member of the House Small Business Committee.
