Congressman Allen West Votes in favor of REINS Act

(WASHINGTON)— Congressman Allen West (R-FL) released this statement today after voting YES in favor of the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act, H.R. 10. The REINS Act would require Congress to approve all major rules, which are those that would have an impact of $100 million or more on the economy.

“When President Barack Obama hasn’t gotten his way through the legislative process, he has gone around the Constitution and the intent of our founding fathers by issuing Executive Orders,”  West said. “The REINS Act takes steps to restore the Constitutional principles of ‘Checks and Balances’ by adding accountability and transparency to the process. Our Federal Government was established with a principle that laws be made by their representatives in Congress, not handed down by Presidential decree.”

In 2011, President Obama and his Administration created 71,000 pages of new regulations, costing 93.2 billion dollars of compliance and 120 man hours of paperwork for businesses to complete.

“The size of regulatory authority coming out of this Administration has left our job creators with very little confidence and certainty, making the economic recovery harder,” West said.  “Legislation like the Reins Act will rein in this out of control abuse of power by the President and ultimately lighten the burden on our job creators.”
