Georgia has a model for draining the swamp

The State of Georgia has been draining the swamp since 1996. Governor Zell Miller created some civil service rules on efficiency. It became easier for supervisors to weed out non-performers and low performers. President Trump could use this as a model for draining the Washington DC Swamp. The term “drain the swamp” was used by politicians to signify a cleanup of government operations. It was taken from the actual process of draining swamps to destroy mosquitoes breeding grounds and defeat malaria. It is interesting that the mosquito is also a blood sucking insect. “Drain the Swamp” is a fantastic rallying cry, and it served President Donald Trump well throughout the election campaign. It represented the hatred the American people had for the bureaucracy and sluggishness that has become the hallmark of the federal government.

As Trump continues to enact his agenda, one place he would do well to examine in regards to “draining the swamp” is Georgia.

Back in 1996, former Gov. Zell Miller (a Democrat, believe it or not) signed into law the Merit System Reform Act, which essentially gave state government supervisors the ability to fire employees who needed to be fired without jumping through all the bureaucratic hoops that are so common with governmental work, according to The Daily Signal.

Joe Tanner, who was chairman of Georgia’s Commission on Privatization of State Services during Miller’s time as governor, thinks that Trump’s presidency is a fantastic chance to do the same to the federal government quagmire.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the federal government, and Georgia can be a model,” Tanner told The Daily Signal.
