Interview by Loop 21 Talks With Black Tea Partier Rep. Allen West

West fears a youth ‘uprising’ is on the way

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) first came on our radar when he became one of the few African Americans to openly claim Tea Party affiliation. He rode that affiliation into office as part of the 2010 Republican takeover of the House in Congress. Any illusions that he would serve quietly or start going mainstream like his fellow Floridian Tea Partier Sen. Marco Rubio was erased when West said that he thought he was Harriet Tubman. The Congressman with the salt-and-pepper, low-top box fade haircut tells African Americans that the Democratic Party that they vote so consistently with is a “plantation” they need to escape from and has threatened to escape the Congressional Black Caucus. West’s escape has yet to happen though as Loop 21 contributor John Wilson caught up with the Florida Tea Bagger at the Congressional Black Caucus’ Annual Legislative Conference over the weekend where he gave us a quick interview:

Loop 21: Do you regret lashing out at Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL)?

Rep. West: No. Why would I? Democrats pretty much have free reign to come after conservatives and the one time we stand up for ourselves and say something back, we’re lambasted for it? Nope. I don’t regret it at all.

Loop 21: You mentioned at the Republicans for Black Empowerment event how poorly the black community is faring in this recession. Do you have a plan to assist the black community? And, if so, would Republicans support it?

Rep. West: Well, I think you can accomplish revitalization in urban communities that have been devastated by unemployment, lack of education, and a liberal powerbase that doesn’t care about them and seeks to undermine their empowerment with failing social programs. And you do it by utilizing the tax code in a way to drive investors to focus capital and resources to these areas. It would cost nothing for the government upfront. If not, you’re going to see  an uprising among these young people similar to what you’ve seen in Philadelphia and other areas.
